We've entered the Cobb Tank Grant Competition! We are hoping to get $10,000 to create a Makerspace! Here is our grant competition video: Brumby Elementary is a Title I school located in Mareitta, GA. Our STEM efforts initiated at the close of 2013-2014. Since our STEM inception we have seen great growth with the student's ability to problem solve and find a deeper understanding of the standards taught in their classrooms. They continually surpass our expectations with the quality of work they produce. Our vision is to become a STEM School. This means all students will participate in STEM learning regardless of the student population.
Brumby has been focused on incorporating STEM Education into our classrooms by adding 2 Math Labs and 2 Science labs that teach both their subject standards and STEM projects. All students K-5 go to these labs in a rotation throughout the year. Additionally, our school has quarterly STEM days where every classroom engages in an all day STEM project Challenge. These challenges are are standards based according to our scope and sequence. These lessons can be found on the "More" tab of this website. We have also had two Science Nights this year! We will be developing our STEM curriculum even more by adding a Family STEM Night in February and our new Elementary is Engineering curriculum into the labs and possible the rest of the core x rotation (specials). We are excited to announce our new partnership with The MACALLAN Group! They will be volunteering with us in classrooms during our quarterly STEM days! We would like to thank them for taking the time to come to our school and for listening and trying to meet our needs. We love that the community is getting involved with our progress!
We would like to sincerely thank the Allstate groups of Atlanta Southeast and Atlanta Employees for helping us achieve our goal of becoming STEM certified. These generous employees donated their time and materials. We appreciate Allstate!
Today our team met to discuss The STEM conference in Athens, GA. We are planning our presentation and will be submitting it to the GA STEM Forum. http://stemgeorgia.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Call-for-Presenters.pdf
Today we were able to meet with Sally Creel and Amy Vitala from the STEM department for Cobb County. We were able to review our plan from last year and share our progress. They were very helpful and gave great suggestions for how to grow our program! One of their suggestions was to go to the STEM Georgia conference in Athens, GA. They also suggested that we register as presenters. What a huge compliment for our program! Our first Key Team meeting with our new STEM Team will be September 1st. This team will incorporate one member from each grade level. We can't wait!
We are so excited to get started this school year with STEM! To better understand where are needs are in the certification process we had our school team leaders do a grade level reflection on the STEM Rubrics. We then compared our 2013-2014 scores with our 2014-2015 scores. There was a big difference! We had a lot of teachers mark that they felt we were in STEM stages 2 and 3. Which is a very big change from STEM 0! We have added a STEM key this year as well! There will be one teacher representative from each grade level on this key. The goal is to create plan to show how we can teach science everyday, design STEM lessons that are aligned with our standards, and increase community involvement with our STEM mission. We have also added in the Engineering is Elementary curriculum to our Core Expansions rotation. Lastly, we have added a Family Engineering Night in February. We are so excited!
